This was the first game we did for Coca-Cola and one of the most involved. The idea was to try and entertain the target audience of the Festive Card Promotion Web site (16-35 years old). This was Coke’s first site in Asia and I wanted to make sure it provided the users with what they would expect from a ‘young,’ fresh, dynamic brand such as Coca-Cola.

This game is the principal reason the average length of time spent on the site was 21 minutes. Other games we developed were based on the success of this one.

The object of the game is to take the role of the Coca-Cola polar bear. A Flash movie shows the bear jumping onto an ice floe as it heads from Alaska down to the south. On the way, he goes fishing with his magnet lure to grasp the bottle caps of bottles and six-packs or cans. Each has a separate value and the more the bear ends up reeling up and putting in his trusty Coca-Cola cooler, the more points the user scores.

Of course it’s not as easy as all that. There are numerous enemies in the deep who will try and break his line so they can keep the Coke for themselves. The six-packs, being heaver, tend to live in the deep of the ocean where the current is swifter and the creatures more menacing.

As time passes, the ice floe will move on to the warmer waters of Hawaii and eventually Singapore. In between levels (created in Macromedia Director) there are Macromedia Flash movies so the user can take a break and enjoy the plot. If the bear makes it through Singapore, he is able to deliver his bounty to his thirsty family in the tropical island.

The top 10 scores were recorded on the site with the user’s name and date of the win so people could compete against each other.
