The youth of Singapore like entering contests and winning things but they do not enjoy having to write a lot in order to do so. At least this is what our research found for teenagers and young adults online. Maybe I shouldn’t be encouraging this kind of literate laziness, but my responsibility was to the client in this instance. I teach English on weekends, so I suppose I’m balanced morally.

To create an interesting incentive for this target audience to visit the Coca-Cola site in Singapore, we created a contest that took the above research into consideration. We made sure it was locally relevent. Using Shockwave Flash, we illustrated a fun, bright, animated game show setting with our hosts, Vanna Purple and Guy Smiley. Game shows are wildly popular in Singapore.

To fit with the site’s Festive Season theme, I had the user select one of four topics: their most memorable Christmas, wildest New Year’s Eve, most interesting Chinese New Year, best Hari Raya party. Twelve graphics were randomly selected from a pool of 120 we illustrated. There were nouns, adjectives and verbs from a whole range of interesting categories - many of which related specifically to Singapore (such as local delicacies). Three of the 12 that appear were tied to the user-selected holiday.

The entrant had to tell the best possible story by using a combination of text and graphics. They had to use all of the images and they inserted them into their tale by dragging and dropping them into place. We created an interface to allow them to add a short text box or a long one and a graphic place holder. The best stories won a prize and were promoted on the site in a winner’s archive.
