The Compaq Partner Network is an extranet that allows Compaqs 1st-tier resellers
(distributors) to learn more about Compaqs newer products, training programs, events,
policies, etc. as well as to help them order bulk computer systems/peripherals, track these orders,
discern special promotions and order collateral material to help them sell to dealers. There
are also administrative tools each reseller can use to help them communicate with Compaq and
update their own information. This system is replicated for each country in the Asia Pacific (14 in all).
The product catalog is pulled from a central database in Compaqs Houston headquarters
that is distributed worldwide - to allow for consistency across all markets. My task was to localize a core system into an Asia Pacific environment through art direction, user-interface design and producing added-on functionality that could integrate with a proprietary database-system created by Compaq. The resellers sessions had to be able to carry through to several different external environments to show them, for example, sales-out information relevant to themselves. Allowing them to travel back-and-forth between local and international systems while retaining their identity and yet being secure. This systems primary asset is cementing the relationship between Compaq and its direct customers - its distribution channel. This is the advantage Compaq has over its revivals, such as Dell, and has kept them the #1 PC & server manufacturer in the world. Our goal is to make their jobs as easy as possible to understand Compaqs products and offer incentives for them to sell to the dealers or major accounts.
