I encouraged Compaq to provide several online services for consumers so they would understand that the corporation was looking after their best interests and not just trying to push boxes. These ‘Do it Yourself’ guides were an important part of the mix that complimented the ‘How to Buy a Computer’ area I also designed.

This is a system of modular, step-by-step, interactive and animated displays that teach users how to take care of any computer system (not just Compaq’s) themselves. The topics currently include:

  • Installation of External Devices
(in Parallel, Serial, SCSI and USB ports)

  • Creation of Small Computer Networks
    (WANS and LANS)

  • Installation of Cards & other Internal Devices
(PSI/ISA, AGP, Memory, Hard Drives, Removables, System Batteries)

  • Setting the IDs on SCSI Devices

  • What Not to Do with a Computer

  • Environmental Factors to Take into Consideration

Each guide gives textual and visual information so the reader can see it isn’t that hard at all to upgrade or extend the functionality of their machines along with advice for ensuring safety and comfort while using them. The user can repeat the animated step, go backwards and forwards and even print out the entire lesson at the end of each.

Using Shockwave Flash ensured that each guide loaded very quickly, the graphics were smooth and clear to allow optimum understanding and could even be zoomed in for finer details.
