My company, XM Asia, had been doing Heineken Japan’s Web site since 1995 so when Heineken Asia needed a site to promote its “Music Horizons” concert in Hong Kong in 1996... they came to us. (We’ve actually had to give up Heineken Japan as well as Nokia Japan due to a lack of resources. This is quite a regional problem.) We will be doing a Heineken Worldwide site for the Chinese community in 1999 from our APAC head office in Singapore.

My Art Director, Kenneth Wee, did the design of this site (his first) and I did the strategy/concept and most of the HTML/PERL programming. It featured the stars of the concert: Jackie Cheung, Paul Young, All-4-One, Vanessa-Mae and the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. There were complete bios on the stars, the necessary concert information, etc. in both English & Cantonese. I came up with an idea to let the stars’s fans turn the tables and give them autographs. Users could post a message on a guestbook, addressed to the performer of their choice, which others could view as well. After the three-day concert, a bound copy of the book - complete with names and email addresses - was presented to each of the headliners. This was in 1996 and was a unique promotional example of the power of the Internet for communications.

There was also a contest for the 10 days leading up to the concert. Entrants from all over the world could, and did, win either a pair of tickets to the show or an autographed poster from a star of their choosing. There were three prizes a day for those 10 days awarded. A winner of the tickets in the United States decided to keep them, rather than trading them in for a different prize as was her option, as a souvenir.
