One of the popular sections on the Asia Pacific Web Site is one devoted to business travellers who, primarily, already own a mobile phone. It asks a series of questions: What country are you travelling to? Which particular city? What month? and What mobile phone network do you use? All so the system can customize information about the destination in a casual manner. Info such as: Business hours, currency, visa issues, which accessories to bring, what the weather will be like, if there are any holidays or festivals at that time, languages, whether your mobile phone network will work there, how to find out more information on the destination, Web sites of partners in the country, etc.

Since this was so useful, I figured it would be a good-will gesture of relationship marketing (as well as a good branding opportunity) for Nokia if we made this into a screensaver. That way the customer wouldn’t have to dial into the comparably slow Internet to find out the information - if they even remembered to.

The system has an auto-mode which will randomly answer the questions and present the data in a sophisticated and pleasing screen environment but the user can, at any time, interrupt it by simply using the mouse to choose a different option from one of the dynamic menus.

Since Nokia’s personality has been readjusted to more be fun and vibrant and less business-like, we have redesigned it for a 1999 version to reflect this change.

The screensaver won a Certificate of Merit in the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents [the 4As] 1998 “Creative Circle Awards”. The judges included producers from Yahoo! and C|NET.
